Aneroid barometers. An aneroid barometer uses a small, flexible metal box known as an aneroid cell. This cell is made from an beryllium and copper and a spring stops it from collapsing. Small changes in external air pressure expand or shrink the cell. This expansion or contraction controls mechanical levers so that small movements of the cell are magnified and shown on the face of the aneroid barometer. The mechanism may be made deliberately 'stiff' so that tapping the barometer reveals whether the pressure is rising or falling as the pointer moves.
